The AskMen Acquire team thoroughly researches & reviews the best gear, services and staples for life.
It's not hard to spot a skater. The graphic tee, now more fitted than years past, or a hoodie — still baggy, and a classic pair of Vans that are probably already trashed from use — are staples. But most skaters almost certainly to be rocking a pair of denim jeans or chinos. That's just the uniform. There's also practical reasons.
"Having durability in the denim or the chinos is probably most important," says Volcom Global Skate Director, Jacob Smith, who we spoke to at this year's X Games in Minneapolis. "Average skater kids, they can't go buy another pair of denim or chinos every single month. They need to be built to last. The other thing is having performance stretch in the chinos or denim because of the way they move around on their skates."
Vorta Jeans S Gene Selvedge
You don't have to be a skateboard enthusiast for these to be a favorite. The slim straight leg fit gives it the cut to work in contemporary outfits and the stretch material offers the mobility to rock denim as performance wear. Volcom blends the old school feel of selvedge denim with the modern with its S Gene® technology

And that's where Volcom pointed its focus, working with top flight skaters to understand what's needed to make the best performance wear that a pair of bottoms can offer. The result has been fabrics that can take on the challenge of repeated falling, sliding, bending and throwing hard, aggressive tricks that require skaters not to have to think about what they're wearing. And if you're just a regular dude, sliding on a pair of Vorta S Gene Selvedge like the ones that Smith showed us, feels like the kind of jeans you can wear every day, (we know, we tried) that hug the appropriate areas while being stretchy enough to drop into a full squat without shredding the seams.
"The durability goes a long way," he said. "Then it's fit. After that it's little details that make the difference."
Smith pointed to the cross-lined stretching on the rear of the denim that combats areas stressed the most by performance activities. Jeans also come with a dual finish buckle button that reinforces the threading that holds your front button so that you don't pop your fly.
Here's a few of our favorite bottoms that highlight Volcom's 2018 selection:
For the guys that like it simple with fits that are classic, the Solver jeans offers a 16-inch leg opening, dual finish buckle button and the two-needle topstitch hem for the back pocket that is a new Volcom identifier. There's also a hidden phone pocket in the left front so you can keep your device secure.
