#designfail
by Dr. Danya Glabau

Description: Design is increasingly a dominant idiom for creation, innovation, research, and critique. But what makes a “good” design? Why do some designs draw public ire and mockery, while others go unnoticed or are embraced? The answers to these question are not just about the practice of design, but also our ethical commitments to common social goods, how we imagine and represent marginalized identities, and what kinds of technology-aided futures we hope to see in the world. Dr. Glabau will explore a number of examples of design successes and failures – factual and fictional – and offer up some critical tools for making design a force for good.

Bio: Dr. Danya Glabau is an anthropologist and science studies scholar who writes and thinks a lot about how technology can be used to build futures we want. She is Founder of the research and consulting firm Implosion Labs, and faculty at NYU Tandon School of Engineering and at the Brooklyn Institute for Social Research. You can follow her social science rants on Twitter at @allergyPhD.

How a gang of Pirates, Free Slaves, Whores, and The World’s Largest Asshole Saved America.
by Shane Snow

Description: Learn the story that they never really taught us in US History class, but definitely should become a movie starring Ryan Gosling as a saucy pirate. And at the same time, learn how the science of diversity actually works—not the sensitivity training shit that corporations keep getting wrong, but how our differences actually make us smarter together.

Bio: Shane Snow is a bestselling author and award-winning journalist who has helped expose gun traffickers and gender inequality in the US government, eaten only ice cream for two weeks in the name of science, and now author of the forthcoming book DREAM TEAMS (June 2018), which is about incredible teams in history and the science of working together better. Shane’s writing has appeared in Fast Company, Wired, The New Yorker, and dozens more top publications. His work has been called “Insanely addicting” by GQ—though he wishes they had been talking about his abs.
